Scope
Engel performed site preparation for a new paper machine and supporting buildings totalling approximately 1,000,000 SF — a mission critical, design-build project requiring close coordination with the civil engineer, general contractor, and owner from the start. The scope included roughly 30,000 CY of grading, 150,000 TON of aggregate, and a 34-foot deep pumping station with earth retention evacuation.
Challenges Overcome
Midway through the project, crews encountered what wasn’t on any plan, 50,000 CY of contaminated soil and coal that required safe removal and disposal before work could continue. Rather than let the added scope derail the schedule, Engel coordinated directly with the engineer, general contractor, and owner to develop a solution, mobilized additional resources, and absorbed the complexity without losing a step. When all was said and done, the project was finished on time.
