Scope
Supporting the construction of a new middle school, Engel’s scope included phased grading, underground utilities, a large underground detention system, turf field construction, and full demolition of the existing building. Work had to be carefully planned, the new school was constructed almost entirely behind the operational existing facility before demolition could begin — totalling 75,000 CY of grading, 110,000 SF of building demolition, and 5,000 LF of underground storm retention.
Challenges Overcome
The defining constraint on this project was time. With the existing school needing to remain fully operational until the new building was ready, all demolition, underground detention, and grading work had to be completed in a single summer — a seven-week window to meet the fall school year.
That meant over 5,000 LF of 80-120” CMP underground detention, 100,000 SF of demolition, a turf football field, and all associated grading, executed with multiple crews on the site at once and no room for a schedule slip. At the end of the project every deadline was met, every crew delivered, and that fall, students walked into a brand new school.
